Zoroaster

ZOROASTER
c.630
-
c.550
BC.
Persian
Prophet.
Zoroaster,
also
called
Zarathustra,
was
an
ancient
Persian
prophet
who
founded
the
first
world
religion
-
Zoroastrianism.
According
to
the
Zend
Avesta,
the
sacred
book
of
Zoroastrianism,
he
was
born
in
Azerbaijan,
in
northern
Persia.
He
is
said
to
have
received
a
vision
from
Ahura
Mazda,
the
Wise
Lord,
who
appointed
him
to
preach
the
truth.
Zoroaster
began
preaching
his
message
of
cosmic
strife
between
Ahura
Mazda,
the
God
of
Light,
and
Ahriman,
the
principle
of
evil.
According
to
the
prophet,
man
had
been
given
the
power
to
choose
between
good
and
evil.
The
end
of
the
world
would
come
when
the
forces
of
light
would
triumph
and
the
saved
souls
rejoice
in
its
victory.
This
dualism
was
part
of
an
evolution
towards
monotheism
in
the
Middle
East.
Zoroaster's
teaching
became
the
guiding
light
of
Persian
civilization

Faravahar

aravahar
is
an
emblem
of
the
Zoroastrian
religion.
Faravahar
means
"to
choose."
The
Faravahar
is
descended
from
the
Egyptian
winged
disk,
a
symbol
of
divine
kingship.
It
once
represented
the
Assyrian
sun
god
Shamash,
and
may
have
represented
the
corona
of
a
solar
eclipse.
In
the
Zoroastrian
faith,
it
represents
the
human
soul.
The
faravahar
has
several
parts:
A
winged
disk-
the
three
layers
of
feathers
represent
the
three
pillars
of
the
Zoroastrian
faith:
good
words,
good
thoughts,
good
deeds.
The
ring
represents
eternity.
Two
streamers,
representing
the
duality
of
good
and
evil-
left
and
right,
respectively.
The
head
of
a
man,
facing
left-representing
the
prophet
Zoroaster,
and
the
choice
to
live
a
morally
upright
life.

Cyrus
The Great
(Korosh

( k´´ m n´ dz) (KEY) ,
dynasty
of
ancient
Persia.
They
were
descended
presumably
from
one
Achaemenes,
a
minor
ruler
in
a
mountainous
district
of
SW
Iran.
His
successors,
when
Elam
declined,
spread
their
power
westward.
Cyrus
the
Great
established
the
Persian
rule
by
his
conquest
of
Astyages
of
Media.
The
Achaemenids
(c.550–330
B.C.)
were
important
for
their
development
of
government
administration,
the
appearance
of
literature
written
in
cuneiform,
and
the
spread
of
Zoroastrianism;
during
this
period
there
was
also
a
great
flourishing
of
Persian
art
and
architecture.
The
Achaemenid
rulers
after
Cyrus
were
Cambyses
II,
the
impostor
Smerdis,
Darius
I,
Xerxes
I,
Artaxerxes
I,
Xerxes
II,
Sogdianus,
Darius
II,
Artaxerxes
II
(opposed
by
Cyrus
the
Younger),
Artaxerxes
III,
Arses,
and
Darius
III.
The
dynasty
ended
when
Darius

Sassanid
dynasty
(
Assailant)
|
|
Ardeshir
-I
Founder
of
Sassanide
dynasty
The
Sassanid
dynasty
(also
Sassanian)was
the
name
given
to
the
kings
of
Persia
during
the
era
of
the
second
Persian
Empire,
from
224
until
651,
when
the
last
Sassanid
shah,
Yazdegerd
III,
lost
a
14-year
struggle
to
drive
out
the
Islamic
Saracens.
The
Sassanid
era
began
in
earnest
in
228,
when
the
Shah
Ardashir
I
destroyed
the
Parthian
Empire
which
had
held
sway
over
the
region
for
centuries.
He
and
his
successors
created
a
vast
empire
which
included
those
lands
of
the
old
Achaemenid
Persian
empire
east
of
the
Euphrates
River.
It
was
their
long
sought-after
goal
to
reunify
all
of
the
old
empire,
and
this
brought
them
into
frequent
wars
against
the
Roman
Empire
and
Byzantine
Empire.
Shah
Khosrau
II
(Kasrâ
in
Arabic)
fleetingly
achieved
this
goal
in
a
series
of
wars
against
the
Byzantine
Empire
between
602
and
616,
conquering
Egypt,
Syria
and
Palestine.
However,
the
Byzantine
Emperor
Heraclius
turned
the
tide
with
a
daring
invasion
of
Persia
itself.
In
628,
Khosrau
was
deposed
with
Heraclius'
army
at
the
gates
of
the
capital
of
Ctesiphon.
In
the
peace
that
followed,
the
Sassanids
retreated
to
their
traditional
frontiers.
The
long
war
exhausted
both
sides,
and
the
Sassanids
were
soon
destroyed
by
the
rise
of
Islam.
